If you always know where your next meal is coming from, count yourself fortunate. Sunday service this week focuses on the basic everyday need for people in the US, Arizona, and Flagstaff to access affordable and nutritious food, when it’s increasingly hard to do so. Today in the U.S., forty-eight million people, close to fourteen percent of all households, are food insecure. That number is rising nationwide due as Federal food assistance program cuts, the worst in 30 years, plunge deeper. To date, Arizona has enacted the most draconian cuts of all, with only half of the people previously receiving benefits now getting food support, leaving 400,000 people hungrier. In Northern Arizona and Flagstaff, the Flagstaff Family Food Center (FFFC) has met rising city and regional demand, seeing its daily meal service increase by eleven percent from 2024 to 2025, and breaking single day service records six times in 2025. Worship associate Cassie Dakan, Beacon’s liaison to the FFFC Mike Bruton, and Food Center Volunteer Coordinator Riley Roberge will lead the service, recognize FFFC volunteers, and provide insights on the state of hunger and food insecurity, and information about what lies ahead to meet growing need and build a resilient Flagstaff and Northern Arizona.
