“Lessons from Eugene Ysaÿe’s Sonata No. 2 in A Minor” with Michael Minear”

ALL ARE WELCOME! You BELONG at Beacon – Spiritually open and intentionally inclusive since 1958.

This Sunday, Michael Minear and Worship Associate George Murphy invite you to enjoy a wonderful performance of Eugene Ysaÿe’s Sonata No. 2, Obsession.

In the early 1920s, world-renowned violinist and composer Eugene Ysaÿe began writing six sonatas for solo violin after having to step away from the stage due to health complications with diabetes. Each sonata is dedicated to a student of Ysaÿe, with Sonata No. 2 being dedicated to Jacques Thibaud.

Titled “Obsession,” the second sonata explores Ysaÿe’s own obsession with Bach, his students, virtuosity, and ultimately death, judgment, and mortality. The sonata is mainly built on the Dies Irae Chant from the medieval Requiem Mass, which serves as a constant reminder of mortality throughout the piece. In this coming service, we will explore these themes and aim to reshape our thoughts and feelings around such a heavy and often dark topic.
