Plans are underway for a community presentation about Somos America by leader Sharon
Kopina. She will share current developments at the border as well as how this organization is
working to mitigate the challenges asylum seekers face when they are delivered from the U.S.-
Mexico border to the Phoenix bus station. These immigrants, many parent(s) with small children,
will have 2-4 day bus trips from there to a sponsor with whom they will stay during the
immigration process. While we will invite other community organizations’ members to donate travel-food items for
these travelers—like we did last month—we are not expecting repeat donations from Beacon
folks! We are aiming for a mid-June date, probably in a venue away from Beacon, due to expansion
construction of church home. Specific arrangements will be announced as soon as they are
League of Women Voters (LWV) event Thursday, May 23, 6:00pm, at Charly’s in the
Weatherford Hotel, corner of Aspen and Leroux downtown.
The new LVW presents their first educational event: Dinner and discussion featuring Coconino
County Recorder Patty Hansen. Her topic will be “Voter Rights and Voter Suppression in
Arizona”. Registration is required. $25 /person, register at lwvflagstaff.bpt.me. Cash or check accepted at

in a discussion about the proposed budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year (as well as other topics).
June 8 (Saturday): Beacon’s Annual Yard Sale.
June 2 (Sunday) following the service: SJA meeting.
June 9 (Sunday) following the service: Beacon’s Annual Congregational Meeting. We will vote
on the budget, new members of our Board of Trustees and by-law revisions. (You must have
been a Beacon member for 28 days to be eligible to vote.)
